Te Deum concert

The Peaceable Kingdom

Music of Randall Thompson, James MacMillan and Arnold Schoenberg

September 21 and 22, 2024

Randall Thompson’s iconic choral masterpiece, “The Peaceable Kingdom.” Thompson’s composition, inspired by Edward Hicks’ paintings, vividly portrays the vision of peace and unity amidst chaos and discord. Its lush harmonies and intricate counterpoint paint a musical canvas that speaks to the longing for tranquility and solidarity in a troubled world. The concert includes Arnold Schoenberg’s haunting “De Profundis,” which examines the depths of human emotion and offers spiritual contemplation. Written during Schoenberg’s later atonal period, this work sets the Latin text of Psalm 130 with profound intensity, delving into themes of repentance, despair, and ultimately, hope. James MacMillan’s powerful “Miserere” draws from the tradition of Gregorian chant and Scottish folk music. MacMillan’s composition juxtaposes ancient and modern musical idioms to explore themes of mercy, forgiveness, and redemption.
